What if I don’t want to dream big?

Ever since we’re little, we’re always asked, “what do you want to be when you grow up?” To which you usually hear, “I want to be an astronaut/actress/dancer.” Most of the films you see show you of normal people trying to make their dreams come true. Whether it was having their own company, becoming a superstar or achieving something they wouldn’t dare dream of.

But what if I don’t have big dreams?

I remember I used to say I want to be a singer, or an actress. But just for fun. I’d never actually consider it as a career. Mostly becuase I don’t think life in the spotlight is fun. And I don’t want people being nosy about my life. But going to award ceremonies would be fun.

The other day I casually mentioned I’d love to open a small café, and I was told, “why are you dreaming so small? You’ve got to go big, what’s the point of having something small when you could do more?” And it made me realise how we’re all conditioned to do something “big”. Why am I being shamed for having such a small dream?

My biggest dream was to travel to Australia, which I did last year. Travelling the world is my dream, but I already do that whenever I can. Is it bad that I’m not ambitious?

In a world full of ambitious people, I’ve never found myself wanting to do something incredible. All I want is a job I love, a few dogs running around my house and plane tickets for life. And maybe a boyfriend who understands my love for memes (but not necessary).

I’m not really shaming anyone for having big dreams. I applaud you. You know what you want. Whereas I don’t. I’m happy to live in bliss. So this post is dedicated to all those people who don’t know what they’re doing with their lives and taking things one day at a time. And those people who are content with their small, tranquil lives (with some adventures here and there).

I’d love to know what you think. Are you a dreamer?
